What it actually is

It's not a wax, It's a polish

Most people use "polish," "wax" and "cut and buff" interchangeably. They're not the same thing. Gloss enhancement is a single-stage machine polish that physically removes a microscopic layer of damaged clear coat, then seals what's underneath. Roughly 60 to 70 percent of the visual benefit of full paint correction, at about 40 percent of the cost.

A.

What it is

Single-stage machine polish using a dual-action RUPES polisher and a fine compound, finished with a hybrid sealant. One careful pass, one product, properly applied.

B.

What it removes

Light swirl marks from automatic car washes, holograms, water spot etching, fine marring, light oxidation. The defects you can see at the right angle but can't feel with your fingernail.

C.

What it doesn't do

Deeper scratches that catch a fingernail (RIDS), key marks, sanding scratches, severe oxidation. Anything heavier needs multi-stage Paint Correction.

D.

Where it sits

Between a Full Detail and full Paint Correction. The sweet spot when a wash and wax isn't enough but full correction is overkill.

The process

Six steps, No shortcuts

Jack has been machine polishing paint on the Sunshine Coast since 2008. Seventeen years of working with Australian sun, salt air, and the kind of light marring our climate produces means the process is dialled in.

Every gloss enhancement at JETWASH follows the same six steps, in the same order, every time.

  1. 01

    Paint inspection

Vehicle is brought into the studio and assessed under proper lighting. We check defect depth, oxidation level, and clear coat thickness to confirm gloss enhancement is the right call (and not a full correction).

  2. 02

    Decontamination wash

Pre-wash snow foam, two-bucket hand wash with pH-neutral shampoo, contact-safe wheel and arch clean. Every surface needs to be clinically clean before any compound touches the paint.

  3. 03

    Clay bar treatment

Embedded contaminants (tar, tree sap, brake dust, industrial fallout) are pulled out of the clear coat with clay. Skipping this step grinds contamination into the paint during polishing.

  4. 04

    Single-stage machine polish

Dual-action RUPES polisher with the appropriate pad and compound, panel by panel. We use RUPES UNO1 or a Meguiar's equivalent depending on paint hardness. Light, controlled passes that lift defects without removing more clear coat than necessary.

  5. 05

    IPA wipe-down

Every panel is wiped with isopropyl alcohol to strip residual polishing oils. This is what separates a real polish from a "filler job," because IPA reveals exactly what defects are gone and what's still there. Anything we missed gets re-worked.

  6. 06

    Hybrid sealant

A Gtechniq hybrid sealant is applied to lock in the finish. Hydrophobic, UV-stable, 6 to 12 months of real-world durability under Sunshine Coast conditions. The car leaves the studio glossy, slick, and protected.

Who it's for

Is this the right service for your car?

Gloss enhancement hits the sweet spot for a specific kind of paint, in a specific kind of condition. Here's when it's the right call.

Cars 1 to 3 years old

Paint that's lost the showroom shine but isn't damaged. A single-stage polish brings the depth back without removing meaningful clear coat.

Automatic car wash damage

The fine spider-web swirl pattern under direct sun. Caused by brush washes, drying with the wrong towel, or generally being touched by anything abrasive.

Pre-sale prep

One of the biggest value-adds before a private sale or trade-in. Buyers and dealers pay attention to paint condition. A few hundred dollars in, several thousand back.

Daily drivers

Hand-washed at home, but light marring still builds up. Annual gloss enhancement keeps a daily driver looking properly cared for without ever needing full correction.

Wow factor on a budget

If full paint correction is more than you want to spend, gloss enhancement gets most of the visual benefit. Especially noticeable on dark colours (black, navy, deep red).

Pre-coating prep

Locking in a fresh ceramic coating? Gloss enhancement is the entry-level prep step before ceramic coating when paint is in good shape.

Heads up

If you can catch your fingernail in a scratch, or your paint is heavily oxidised, you need paint correction, not gloss enhancement. We'll always tell you straight at inspection.

Common questions

Gloss enhancement FAQ

How long does gloss enhancement actually last?+

The polish itself is permanent (the defects are physically removed). The hybrid sealant on top lasts 6 to 12 months in real-world Sunshine Coast conditions, depending on how the car is washed and stored. Garaged and hand-washed cars sit at the higher end, daily drivers parked outside at the lower end.

What's the difference between this and a wax?+

A wax sits on top of the paint and adds shine. A polish actually removes a microscopic layer of damaged clear coat with mild abrasives, so the gloss you see is the paint itself, not a coating over it. Gloss enhancement is a polish, then a sealant. A wax does neither.

Can it remove scratches?+

Light scratches yes, deep scratches no. The rule of thumb: if you can catch a fingernail in it, gloss enhancement won't remove it. Light swirl marks, holograms, water spot etching, fine marring, all gone. RIDS (Random Isolated Deeper Scratches) need multi-stage paint correction.

Is it the same as "cut and polish"?+

Same family, modern execution. "Cut and polish" was the older term for an aggressive single-step machine polish, often done with rotary buffers that left holograms behind. Gloss enhancement is the dual-action, finer-grade modern version, done with calibrated RUPES tools and finishing compounds. Better result, no rotary marks, less clear coat removed.

Will it work on my older car?+

Often, yes. Older single-stage paint and modern clear coat both respond well to a gloss enhancement, provided the defects are light to moderate. The deciding factor is depth of damage, not age of car. We confirm at inspection. Heavily oxidised paint may need full correction first.

Do I need to ceramic coat it after?+

No, the hybrid sealant included in gloss enhancement gives you 6 to 12 months of protection on its own. If you want longer-term protection (2 to 9 years), ceramic coating is a separate service that goes on top of polished paint. Gloss enhancement is a great prep step for a coating.

How long does it take?+

Most vehicles are a same-day job, typically 4 to 6 hours including the wash and clay bar prep. Larger vehicles or paint in worse condition can take longer. Drop the car in the morning, collect it the same afternoon in most cases.

Will it damage my clear coat?+

Done properly, no. A single-stage polish removes only a tiny fraction of the clear coat, far less than aggressive cutting. We use dual-action RUPES polishers (not rotary), finishing-grade compounds, and check thickness on darker or thinner paint. After 17 years of polishing paint we know exactly when to back off. Your clear coat is the goal, not the casualty.
